Family Photography: Why It Pays To Have Family Portraits

by frederick talactac

In the field of early professional photography, the real essence of family photography was overlooked. Back then, photographers don't know how to motivate their family subjects during portrait sessions, while the family on the other hand does not feel any desire to participate. It can be observed that most if not all family stills from centuries ago were usually stiff images wherein the subjects are idly sitting on chairs without showing unnecessary movements, snapped under limited lighting with large format cameras and slow film. The resulting photos are stiff and formal and they do not necessarily capture the feelings behind such expressions.

It should be regarded that just like family storytelling, photos depict relationships among family members, but this is not well represent in past family photography. However, the changes in technology have also brought about changes in behavior. Because more and more people are now own cameras and are becoming adept to its technicalities, the process of photography has become less intimidating, which in turn permit changes in the emotional content of family photos. Meaning, family members are now accustomed to posing at their own liberty during photo shoots.

Modern family photography is moving away from stiff and formal photos of the past that were often snapped inside studios. Nowadays, more and more family groups are inclined to having their photos taken at locations that have special meanings to them. It can be inside their bedrooms, at their favorite vacation area, or together with their prized possessions, which truly resonate their indebtedness to family time. Nevertheless, while the subjects from early photos were demanded to straightly look at the camera and hold stiff poses, modern snapshots allow the family to perform certain activities without necessarily looking at the camera.

Actually, there are three principal reasons why parents often commission a family portraiture: for pride, documentation of family growth and most importantly to remember things not only the faces but especially and laughter and fun during the moment. Photographing children, for instance, has become so common because for parents capturing their little ones during their early years is a priceless reminder of a time that will never be returned again. The portraits of children in the family are more than just historical documentations of their growth, but they also become universal commemorative pieces that encompass the kids' innocence that will be gone once they grow up.

The same thing could be said with teen photos often commissioned during high school graduations, which is a fundamental changing time for the whole family because on one hand it is that time when parents are so proud of their daughter's or son's academic accomplishment and maturity, and on the other end is the realization of how their child grew up so fast. From that point forward, family gatherings become less and less frequent, so the times spent together as a family during special occasions become more and more special. Regardless if it is during a wedding, parent's anniversary or christening of grandchild, the fact that the family is gathered once again is a reason enough to capture every sweet moment from such events. Family portraits frame freeze important parts of our lives that often remind us why we work, love and live.

More than just capturing the aesthetics of every family member, family portraiture, regardless if they are teen photos, parent photos or children photos has a more important function. It is about getting a hold of the inner heart and soul of the family. Subjects should be able to both look or never look at the camera and still be able to express their real emotions through their eyes and actions. By all means, family photos are resonant of how the a certain family perceives the world.

Studio formals are things of the past when it comes to family photography. Modern family portraiture can now be carried out even in the most unconventional places in order to properly capture the emotions and heart of every family member. Photographing children and snapping teen photos are important means to capture moments within the life of your children, with which they could look back to when they already have their own family.
